Bathroom Remodel – Doylestown, PA

This 70-square-foot bathroom remodel in Doylestown converted what was a single-vanity, tub-shower bathroom into a more functional daily-use space with a double vanity, two medicine cabinets with individual light fixtures, and a full-height tiled tub surround. The plumbing scope was larger than the square footage suggests — new water lines and a drain had to be run for the double vanity, a new toilet was installed, and the tub surround tile was taken all the way to the ceiling.

Demolition and Substrate

Full demolition cleared the room back to the framing. Moisture-resistant green board was installed on the walls, and cement board went in on the floor and throughout the tub and shower surround area. The tub surround is the section of this project that sees the most water exposure every day — getting the substrate right there is what determines whether the tile adhesion holds over years of use or starts to fail at the grout joints and edges.

The Tub Surround: Full Height Tile and Sliding Doors

The bathtub area was tiled from the tub ledge all the way to the ceiling. Taking the tile to the ceiling rather than stopping at a conventional height removes the transition between tiled wall and painted drywall that sits directly above a tub — that transition is where moisture gets behind the surface over time if it is not properly sealed and maintained. Full-height tile eliminates the problem by extending the waterproof surface through the full height of the enclosure.

Sliding shower doors were installed to close the tub opening. Sliding doors work well in bathrooms where there is not enough clearance for a hinged door to swing fully open — they stay within the tub footprint and do not require additional floor space to operate. A new shower faucet was installed as part of the tub area update.

Going from Single to Double Vanity: The Plumbing Work

Upgrading from a single vanity to a double vanity in an existing bathroom is not just a cabinet swap — it requires running new plumbing. In this case, new water supply lines and a new drain were installed to support the second sink location. That work happens before the floor tile goes in and before the vanity is set, which is why the sequencing of a bathroom remodel matters. The plumbing rough-in has to be correct and tested before any finish surfaces cover it.

The double vanity was then installed with two sinks and two faucets. Two new electrical outlets were added at the vanity — one per side — to provide adequate power for both users without sharing a single outlet. A third outlet was added near the toilet for potential future use.

Two Medicine Cabinets with Individual Lighting

Rather than a single large mirror or one centered light fixture, this bathroom uses two medicine cabinets — one above each sink — each with its own mirror and light fixture. Dividing the storage and lighting between the two sink positions mirrors how the double vanity is actually used: two people, two storage areas, and illumination that covers both sides of the vanity without leaving one side shadowed.

Flooring, Threshold, and Finishing

New tile was installed on the bathroom floor throughout. A 4-inch polished engineered marble threshold was set at the door jamb — a wider threshold profile that creates a more substantial transition detail than a standard threshold and holds up better at a high-traffic door entry. The room was painted throughout, a new exhaust fan was installed, baseboards were put in, and accessories were mounted with blocking in the walls for long-term stability.

What Changed

The practical improvement in this bathroom is primarily the double vanity upgrade — two people can use the space simultaneously without one waiting on the other, and the storage is now organized for two rather than consolidated into one. The full-height tub surround tile resolved the moisture exposure issue at the top of the tub enclosure. The sliding doors replaced whatever was there before with a properly operating enclosure. At $11,500 for 70 square feet including new plumbing lines, this project is a mid-range full remodel in Doylestown.

Bathroom Remodeling in Doylestown

Doylestown is the county seat of Bucks County with a range of housing types — from historic borough properties to suburban development in the surrounding township. A common pattern in older single-family homes is a single-vanity bathroom layout that no longer suits how the household uses the space. Upgrading to a double vanity — and running the plumbing it requires — is a project that needs a full remodel to do properly.
