Bathroom Remodel – Bryn Athyn, PA - shower system

This bathroom remodel in Bryn Athyn converted a dated bathroom into a high-finish space built around Calacatta White 24”×48” porcelain tile on the shower walls, a matte black fixture package applied consistently across every fitting in the room, and a double recessed niche framed in black. The shower floor is dark small-format mosaic tile — a deliberate contrast to the light marble-look wall surface. A TOTO Aquia IV toilet, LED medicine cabinet, frameless sliding matte black shower door, and Pfister matte black vanity faucet and accessories complete the scope. Completed March 2026 at $12,850. Calacatta White 24”×48” to the Ceiling

The shower walls are tiled with Calacatta White 24”×48” Matte porcelain from floor to ceiling. At this format — two feet wide by four feet tall — each tile covers eight square feet of wall surface. The result is a minimal grout line across the full height of the shower, and the marble-look veining reads as a near-continuous surface rather than a segmented tile field.

Full-height tile in a shower serves a practical purpose beyond appearance: it eliminates the transition between the tiled wet zone and any painted or drywalled surface above it. That transition is one of the most common locations for moisture to work behind the wall surface over time as caulk ages. Taking the tile to the ceiling removes the joint entirely.

Large-format tile at this size requires a substrate that is flat within tight tolerances. Any variation in the framing or cement board surface telegraphs across the tile as lippage — where one tile edge sits visibly higher than the adjacent tile. The substrate preparation for this installation was done to the tolerance the tile size requires.

Dark Mosaic Shower Floor: The Contrast Decision

The shower floor uses a small-format dark mosaic tile — a deliberate contrast against the light Calacatta wall tile. The design logic is the same used in other projects in this portfolio: pale tile at the walls makes the enclosure feel open; dark tile at the floor anchors the space visually and gives the shower a defined base plane.

Small-format mosaic tile on a shower floor also has a functional advantage: more grout lines per square foot means more traction on a wet, sloped surface. A large-format tile on a shower floor requires complex cuts to drain correctly toward the center drain and produces fewer grout lines underfoot. The mosaic format handles both the slope and the traction naturally.

Double Recessed Niche with Black Frame

A 30-inch double recessed niche was built into the shower wall — two shelves stacked vertically, each framed in matte black metal trim. The niche was framed during the rough-in phase, before the cement board and tile went up. Built-in niches cannot be added into a finished tiled shower wall without cutting through the waterproofing and tile; planning them at the start means they are properly waterproofed and tiled flush with the surrounding wall.

The black metal trim at the niche perimeter connects visually to the matte black shower fixtures, shower door frame, and accessories throughout the room. It is one of the details that reads clearly in the finished room as a considered choice rather than a standard installation.

Matte Black Throughout: Fixture Consistency

Every plumbing fixture and hardware item in this bathroom is matte black: the SR SUN RISE rain showerhead and hand shower, the shower valve, the ANZZI sliding door hardware, the Pfister Deckard vanity faucet, the Pfister Contempra towel ring and robe hook and toilet paper holder, and the accessories throughout. Using one finish across every fitting in the room is what makes a fixture package read as a design decision rather than an accumulation of separate selections.

Matte black against Calacatta White tile produces a high-contrast, clean result — the dark hardware reads against the light tile without competing with the veining pattern. It is also a practical finish choice: matte black does not show water spots the way polished chrome or nickel does, which matters in a room that gets daily use.

SR SUN RISE 12” Rain Shower System

The shower system is an SR SUN RISE 12-inch ceiling-mounted rain head with a wall-mounted hand shower on a slide bar and a concealed matte black valve. A ceiling rain showerhead delivers water in a wide, low-pressure pattern from directly above — a different experience from a wall-mounted showerhead. The ceiling-mount position requires the supply line to be run through the ceiling framing during the rough-in phase, before the cement board and tile close the shower walls. This is part of the pre-tile plumbing work that determines how clean the finished installation looks: a properly roughed-in ceiling supply has the pipe hidden inside the tile, not surface-mounted.

TOTO Aquia IV and LED Medicine Cabinet

The TOTO Aquia IV is a dual-flush toilet at 1.28 and 0.9 gallons per flush. The low-flush option at 0.9 GPF is one of the more water-efficient toilet configurations available in residential use, and the TOTO Aquia is a recognized fixture for combining that efficiency with a clean contemporary form. The elongated bowl and skirted trapway give it a streamlined appearance consistent with the rest of the room.

The Sasha SA3642 LED medicine cabinet — 36 inches wide by 42 inches tall — provides wall-recessed storage and integrated LED side lighting. Side-lit LED mirrors illuminate the face from the correct direction for daily grooming: from in front, at or near eye height, rather than from overhead where a ceiling fixture casts downward shadows. The large cabinet format also provides storage capacity that keeps the vanity counter clear.
