Deck Renovation – Philadelphia, PA
This Philadelphia deck project was not a new build — the existing frame was sound, and the goal was to replace every surface and structural element above it with new materials. That meant pulling the old decking boards and railings, installing Trex Transcend composite decking in Island Mist, adding 16 new structural railing posts, running white composite railings around the full perimeter, and finishing with a new concrete landing at the base of the existing stairs. The stairs themselves were removed temporarily, then reinstalled once the decking and railing work was complete.

- Trex Transcend composite decking — Island Mist color
- 16 new structural railing posts
- White composite railing system (top rail, bottom rail, balusters)

- New concrete landing at the stair base
Keeping the Frame, Replacing Everything Else
A deck renovation that preserves the existing frame is a different project from a ground-up build. It costs less and takes less time, but it only makes sense when the frame has been properly evaluated and is genuinely structurally sound. On this project, once the decking boards and railings were removed, the frame was inspected and confirmed to be in good condition — the joists, beams, and posts were solid, and there was no rot, moisture damage, or structural compromise that would require replacement.
Starting from a sound frame and replacing all the visible surfaces is the most efficient path when the bones of the deck are good. It delivers a completely updated appearance and improved performance materials without the cost of rebuilding the structural system.
Trex Transcend Composite Decking — Island Mist
Trex Transcend is the premium tier of the Trex product line — above the Enhance Basics used on the Browns Mills project earlier in this portfolio. The Transcend line uses a three-layer shell system that provides deeper scratch resistance and stronger fade protection than the entry-level composite products. Island Mist is a cool gray tone with a subtle wood-grain texture that gives the deck a contemporary appearance without reading as synthetic from a normal viewing distance.
Like all Trex composite products, Transcend does not require sealing, staining, or sanding. The maintenance difference compared to pressure-treated wood — which needs cleaning and periodic sealing to maintain its appearance and structural integrity — is significant over a five- to ten-year period. The higher upfront material cost of Transcend is offset by not having to refinish the deck surface every few years.
16 New Railing Posts
New structural posts were installed around the full deck perimeter to support the composite railing system. The posts are the structural element that keeps the railing system rigid under lateral load — a person leaning against or pushing on a railing is applying that load at the post, not at the balusters or rails. Installing new posts as part of this renovation meant the railing system was anchored to new, properly sized and fastened hardware rather than relying on the original post connections, which may have been sized for a different railing system.
Sixteen posts around a 300-square-foot deck perimeter represent appropriate post spacing to keep the railing system solid without excessive flex between posts.
White Composite Railings
White composite railings were chosen to contrast with the Island Mist decking — a cool gray deck surface with white railings is a combination that gives the deck a clean, finished appearance without heavy visual mass. Composite railings, like the decking, do not require painting or staining. The white finish does not yellow or chalk the way painted wood does over time with UV exposure.
Existing Stairs: Removed, Reinstalled
The existing staircase was structurally sound, so it was removed temporarily to allow the decking and perimeter railing work to be completed cleanly, then reinstalled once the new deck surface and railings were in place. Reinstalling the existing stairs is more efficient than replacing them when the structure is good — and it preserves the original landing height relationship between the stairs and the yard grade, which does not need to be re-established.
A new concrete landing was installed at the base of the stairs. The landing provides a stable, level surface at the stair exit point — ground-level erosion and settling at the foot of deck stairs is common over time, and a poured concrete landing eliminates that problem.
What the Homeowner Got
The finished deck has completely new surfaces — composite decking that will not need seasonal maintenance, a full composite railing system on new structural posts, and a clean concrete landing at the stair base. The frame underneath it is the original structure, confirmed to be sound before any new material was installed on it. At $11,800 for 300 square feet, this renovation reflects what replacing deck surfaces and railings with premium composite materials costs in Philadelphia when the existing frame does not need to be replaced.
Deck Installation and Renovation in Philadelphia
Philadelphia decks sit in a range of conditions depending on the property type — attached rowhouses in dense neighborhoods, twins and singles in the Northeast, and standalone properties throughout. The city has specific permit requirements for deck work, and the range of deck projects varies from small rear-yard platforms to substantial multi-level structures. Belmax Remodeling works throughout Philadelphia on both new deck installations and renovations of existing structures.

Considering a Deck Project?
Deck renovations that replace surfaces and railings on an existing sound frame typically run less than ground-up builds at the same square footage. This Philadelphia project — 300 square feet, Trex Transcend composite decking, 16 new railing posts, white composite railings, and a new concrete landing — came in at $11,800, completed May 2025.
