This was not a full bathroom renovation. It was a targeted shower rebuild — which is a more technically precise scope than it sounds. Stripping the shower back to the framing, rebuilding the wet-area assembly from the liner up, flood-testing the new base before tile goes in, and reconfiguring the valve location to the opposite wall: that sequence is what makes a shower rebuild worth doing rather than just re-tiling what’s already there. Why This Scope Is Right for Some Bathrooms
A shower rebuild without a full bathroom renovation makes sense when the shower is the problem and the rest of the bathroom — the vanity, the toilet, the flooring, the layout — is still functional. It’s a more focused and more cost-effective scope than gutting a room where most of what’s there is still working.
The constraint that comes with it: the new shower has to tie back into the existing room cleanly. Demolition has to stay controlled so the surrounding surfaces aren’t damaged. The new tile, threshold, and curb have to meet the existing floor and wall without a visible gap or patch. On this project, that included the possibility of reinstalling the existing glass door — which required the new curb and tile work to be completed at dimensions that the existing door could still fit.
Flood Test Before Tile
After the new liner, mortar bed, and drain were installed, the shower pan was flood-tested — the drain was plugged and the pan was filled with water to check for leaks before any tile went down. This is the step that verifies the wet-area assembly before it’s permanently covered by the finished shower floor. A shower pan that passes a flood test gives a clear baseline: the assembly works, and the tile installation can proceed on a confirmed base. A pan that doesn’t pass gets corrected before it’s buried under tile.
Valve Relocation
The shower valve was relocated as part of this rebuild — moved from one wall to the opposite side, with the original location capped. Valve position affects where you stand in the shower to turn the water on and adjust temperature, which is a more meaningful ergonomic detail than it gets credit for. The old placement required reaching across the shower spray to operate the controls. The new position lets you adjust the water before stepping into the stream. The relocation had to happen at the rough-in phase, before the cement board and waterproofing closed the wall.
Tile to the Ceiling and Built-In Storage
Wall tile was installed in a stacked layout all the way to the ceiling. Mosaic tile on the shower floor handled the pitch around the drain without requiring complex cuts. A recessed niche was built into the shower wall for storage, and homeowner-supplied corner shelves were also installed. Both storage elements keep the shower organized without projecting off the wall.
